CVE-2006-3597 describes a critical vulnerability in the passwd utility on Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, where the root password could be inadvertently zeroed out if an administrator selected "Go Back" after installation completion. This local vulnerability (CVSS 7.2) allows an unauthenticated attacker with local access to gain full control (confidentiality, integrity, and availability) of the system with low attack complexity.
