CVE-2005-1018 describes a buffer overflow vulnerability in the UniversalAgent component of CA BrightStor ARCserve Backup. This flaw allows remote, authenticated attackers to trigger a denial of service or execute arbitrary code by sending a crafted agent request with an oversized argument to TCP port 6050. Rated with a CVSS score of 7.5, this vulnerability is easily exploitable over the network with low complexity and no authentication required, potentially leading to full compromise of the affected system. While not on the KEV catalog, a Metasploit module exists for exploitation, indicating readily available exploit code. Despite this, there is no evidence of active exploitation, and it has received minimal community discussion or media coverage.
