OVERVIEW CVE-2026-40097 is a denial-of-service vulnerability affecting Step CA versions 0.24.0 through 0.30.0-rc2, an online certificate authority platform used for automated certificate management in DevOps environments. The flaw exists in the TPM device attestation validation logic, where an attacker can craft a malicious attestation key certificate with an empty Extended Key Usage extension to trigger an index out-of-bounds panic. Only deployments utilizing TPM device attestation for ACME challenges are vulnerable; standard certificate issuance workflows are unaffected.
