CVE-2026-33040 is a high-severity denial-of-service vulnerability affecting the libp2p-rust networking stack, specifically its Gossipsub implementation in versions prior to 0.49.3. A remote, unauthenticated attacker can exploit this by sending a specially crafted PRUNE control message with an excessively large backoff value, triggering an integer overflow during time arithmetic and causing the application to crash. Rated with a CVSS score of 7.5 (High), the vulnerability has low attack complexity and can be repeatedly exploited for persistent service disruption.
