CVE-2023-7216 describes a path traversal vulnerability in the CPIO utility, affecting GNU CPIO, Red Hat CPIO, and their respective Enterprise Linux distributions. This medium-severity vulnerability (CVSS 5.3) could allow an unauthenticated attacker to trick a user into extracting a specially crafted archive. Successful exploitation, requiring user interaction, could lead to arbitrary file writes outside the intended directory via symlinks, resulting in limited impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Currently, there is no evidence of active exploitation, public exploit code (Metasploit, Nuclei, ExploitDB), or significant community discussion or media coverage.
