CVE-2022-40261

26
FAUCET Score

CVE-2022-40261 is a high-severity privilege escalation vulnerability (CVSS 8.2) affecting AMI Aptio V and Intel NUC M15 Laptop Kit firmware. An attacker can exploit a buffer overflow in the OverClockSmiHandler module to elevate privileges from ring 0 to ring -2, enabling arbitrary code execution in System Management Mode (SMM). This allows for the installation of persistent firmware backdoors, bypasses SMM-based SPI flash protections, and can subvert UEFI security mechanisms like Secure Boot. There is currently no evidence of active exploitation, public exploit code, or significant community discussion surrounding this vulnerability.
